Summer Essentials
From Pet Pavilon
It’s set to be a scorcher! So make sure your pooch has everything they may need for those long, hot summer days! From cooling products and travel goodies to summer time games, Pet Pavilion have got you covered! Here's a selection of our favourite Pet Pavilion goodies to help us to be fun and responsible dog owners during the warmer months.
Cooling mat
This cooling mat is an absolute blessing on those stuffy summer days, especially for the flat faced doggies like Puggy who really suffer when heat is on. These gel beds come in a variety of sizes and they retain their coolness, giving your pooch some much needed relief. We even put ours in Puggys bed over night to help him get some rest. We have used this every sunny day during lockdown and is probably our number one summer essential. All three of our love it and they have their own little cooling cave in the garden, set up with water bowls, plenty of shade, some toys and their beloved cooling mat!
Pet Pavilion Blanket
Who doesn’t love a picnic on a summers day (or evening for that matter). Whether you're off on an adventure, or simply setting up camp in the garden, Pet Pavilion have a wide range of Picnic blanket options, which double up as super chic sofa throws or doggy/human blankets for the winter months! Our favourite is the super chic mustard yellow tartan number, complete with leather carry straps and waterproof lining! It looks gorgeous, is hard wearing AND fits us and all three dogs on comfortably, for endless adventures in the sunshine!
Leaf water bottle
Whilst on the subject of picnics, it would be a crime to not remind you to keep your pooch hydrated! We never leave home without the Pet Pavilion leaf water bottle. The silicone cover folds out to use as a dish for your pooch to drink from and its complete with a handy clip to attach it almost anywhere.
They come in a variety of colours and they are a much better alternative to the environmental enemy, the disposable plastic bottle.
DIY Summer treats
What better way to show your pooch you love them, than by making them frozen natural doggy snacks?!
We simply use ice lolly moulds or ice cube trays, mix natural yoghurt with some peanut butter and strawberries, add in some of your doggies fave fruits or treats and VOILA! After a few hours in the freezer, you have something delicious and refreshing and your dog will love you for it!
We used Peamutt butter from Pet Pavilion and threw in some Chicken chipolata pieces and blueberries. And the crowd went wild!
Cooling bandana
These cooling bandanas are absolute essentials if you have a hot pooch around the house or during walkies. During the hotter months, you wont see our three without their cool bandanas on. Simply wet the bandana and attach it to your doggy using the Velcro patches. When they start to warm with the dogs body heat, you just need to apply more water. They come in a selection of sizes from tiny Pops size, to chunky Puggy size!
Top tip, when its super hot, pop the bandanas in the fridge to help your dog cool down in record time!
Cooling floaty toys
If like us, you’ve managed to get your hands on a paddling pool for your fur babies, then you NEED these floaty toys! They absorb water and float, so they are great fun for splashing around in the pool, and also double up as a cooling device!
Simply soak with water and leave for your pet to play with or to cuddle up to. Endless fun and relief from the heat!
Indoor Play
As most dedicated dog owners know, its dangerous to take your pooch out for walkies when its too hot. Our dogs get frustrated and naughty when they havnt been excerised, so we always have brain training toys at hand for them to be stimulated indoors and stay safe from heatstroke.
Pet Pavilion have a huge range of puzzle toys, designed to stimulate all doggies large and small and we simply couldn’t live without ours! These are a lifeline for bored pooches, until the temperature is cool enough for late evening walkies
Paw washer
Perfect for insect bites or keeping muddy/sandy paws clean
Summer days at the beach are our absolute FAVE! But we have found that poor puggy gets irritated by the sand and salt water.
We biught the pet pavilion paw washer to keep in the car, so every time we head home after exploring somewhere, we can wash puggys paws quickly and efficiently with no mess. We just carry fresh water in the car, fill the silicone paw washer and pop puggys paws in one by one. It has soft silicone bristles which helpt clean the fur and paw pads with ease and Puggy is a muich happier dog since we discovered this!
The main thing to remember, is to have fun and stay hydrated, and that goes for both humans and dogs! Look out for signs of doggy heatstroke and make sure there is always shade and plenty of fresh water available.
SYMPTOMS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS
Heatstroke develops when a dog can't reduce their body temperature and it can be fatal. Signs of heatstroke include:
Heavy panting
Glazed eyes
A rapid pulse
Excessive salivation
Lack of coordination
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Loss of consciousness
HOW TO TREAT HEAT STROKE IN DOGS
If you think your dog has heatstroke, you need to act fast. Take them to a cool, shaded area. Apply towels soaked in cold water to their head, neck and chest and let them drink water or lick an ice cube. Never place them directly into ice cold water or give them too much to drink as they may go into shock.
Make sure you contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has heatstroke.
