Sykes Cottages Dog friendly accommodation review
Last week, my little family was lucky enough to be invited to stay in the most gorgeous dog friendly holiday home, in exchange for an honest review.
Sykes cottages have a huge range of dog friendly accommodation dotted all over the country, so you’re guaranteed to find something that is right up your street in the perfect location for you and your family.
Our needs were simple, yet not actually that easy to find… we needed a holiday home that would accommodate 3 well behaved dogs. We opted for St Agnes in Cornwall, as its a place we have never visited but heard great things and the house we stayed in was called Idlewild and it was top notch and I literally couldn’t fault it if I tried. Sykes cottage have sections on their site dedicated to helping dog owners find the perfect home from home. Idlewild is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of St Agnes town, but within walking distance, so you really get the best of both worlds. The bakery, convenience store, pubs, restaurants etc are less than a 10 minute walk away with the beach 15 minutes away via the most gorgeous coastal path with breathtaking views.
With everything you need within reach, it would be very easy to stay in St Agnes for the duration of your stay. There’s a plethora of pubs serving local beers and quality food a well as a very cute Hawaiian/Tikki style restaurant called The Tap House that is pretty high on my list of favourite spots ive ever eaten. Its an absolute pleasure to visit the town and the sandy dog friendly beach which is busting with cute independent shops, cafes and things to do. The entire time we were in St Agnes, we didn’t come across a single place that wasn’t dog friendly, so if you’re like me and you take your fur babies everywhere with you, St Agnes is a real treat and truly one of the most dog friendly places ive ever experienced.

We could have easily stayed within St Agnes for our 6 day trip and not needed to use the car, but If you’d like to explore a little further away, St Agnes is great base as there are so many fun things to do and see only a short drive away. We drove to St Ives for a day trip and also to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, both of which only took us 30 minutes by car and come highly recommended!
Now back to the house! Idlewild allows 3 dogs per booking to stay at the venue and they are made to feel very welcome from the onset. When you walk in, dog bowls are waiting in the hallway, already filled with water to refresh your pups after their journeys. There are two dog beds available to use and they even left a few poop bags and some doggy treats which really made us feel so welcome.
The house is ‘upside down’ meaning that the living room, dining space and kitchen is on the top floor, with three large bedrooms and two bathrooms on the ground floor. The place is big, dreamy and spacious with two terraces off the top floor and another terrace and lawned garden on the ground level to the rear. Its worth mentioning the ground level garden isn’t completely secure, so perhaps bring a long dog leash with you, or do what we did and black the entry point with a garden stool! Simple!
Our dogs were happy here from the moment we arrived until the moment we reluctantly left and we all have such fond memories of the house and the area. All three dogs found their spots and made themselves at home very quickly! Little Pops, our older dachshund made herself a little nest next to the log burner by night, and on the sun trap balcony during the day. While the boys, Puggy and Pugyay quickly fell in love with the underfloor heating throughout the property and would literally settle and snooze anywhere! I also love that the master bedroom had a door with direct garden access which was super convenient in the mornings with three dogs needing their morning wee wee!
The venue sleeps up to 6 guests and I would strongly recommend booking now as this place ticks every box for dog owners wanting a chic, fun, easy break in a special place. Idlewild is immaculate, with extremely high standards throughout. Its private, with stunning views and totally accessible with every mod con you can think of including a fully equipped designer kitchen, laundry room, driveway for multiple cars, coffee machine, games rooms, bbq and sooo much more!
Believe me when I say, we will be returning time and time again and we are already planning our next rip in the autumn! Its been a few days but im still buzzing from such a perfect getaway and I’m so thankful we discoveredd Sykes Holidays who made everything so smooth and stress free for all of us!
Snackies out of ten? 10/10 will definitely return again and again and again!
